In my more than sixty years of training in numerous martial art systems (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate-Do, and combatives) I have read numerous books to increase my skill level. This book (Winning on the ground: Training and techniques for Judo and MMA fighters by AnnMaria De Mars and James Pedro Sr., 200 page soft cover) is one of the best volumes I have ever read on the subject of ground techniques for Judo and mixed martial arts.This excellent book explains in great detail the follow up methods from standing throws or takes downs to ground lock up techniques. The numerous clear black and white photographs showing Ronda Rousey (De Mars’s daughter) performing the techniques are fantastic. This wonderful book is organized into nine chapters covering the following material: Six secrets to better ground work, mat-work connections, two mat-work techniques everyone should know, mat-work series: leaving an opponent nowhere to go, mat-work counters, drill the right way to win on ground, basic mat-work drill training, situation drills and essential of winning on the ground.This is a serious training text and the authors strongly emphasize that each of these techniques must be practiced over and over until they become automatic reactions on the mat. This is the same advice I give in my reviews of all martial arts books. The true value of this book is achieved when reading the book is combined with actual hands-on training with a Black Belt Judo/Jujitsu/MMA instructor.If you are presently training with an instructor this book will reinforce the material you learned and also serve as an excellent reference source. I began collecting judo (and some BJJ) books about 7 years ago--classics, new ones, rare and expensive, and not-so-rare--all in an effort to find that perfect book or two that can help me with judo (my obsession). I'm not young (49) so over the past couple years I've been gravitating more away from the high-amplitude, dynamic throwing techniques, and more towards the ground / grappling techniques where I can still be competitive--the pins, strangles, and armlocks. This book completely fulfills my needs for a manual on how to develop a winning strategy and seamlessly transition from a throw to a pin or submission. It's straightforward, pithy, well-written, and logical. And, it's non-conventional, which is refreshing. It should be in any judoka's or BJJ-er's library.

Whether gi or no-gi, this book provides a well-written, coherently illustrated introduction to training the techniques important for transitioning from the "stand-up" grappling game to groundwork and, ultimately, submissions and chokes. Both judo players and bjj practitioners (as well as mixed martial artists generally) will benefit from paying attention to moving smoothly from throws into winning positions on the ground; the basic premise of this book, as well as the basis of success shown by the authors and their students, is that how one transitions in this "no-man's" (no-woman's?) land is what separates the winners from the losers.While I can make no great claims to grappling brilliance, as I'm only a brown belt in judo (and due to advancing age and recurring injuries, not competitive beyond my club's walls), I can say that I have benefited from a Black Belt who has trained us in these transitions, and over the course of this year he has incorporated many of the drills contained in this book. In this time, I have found myself getting more explosive in my throws, smoother in transitions, and more likely to submit my teammates in a shorter period of time. While hard work will account for many gains the reader will make, smart work assisted through the insights and drills contained within this book will lead to a smarter, more adept and dangerous grappler.

Fantastic book for any level Judoka or even grappler. Instead of putting a lot of techniques in the book focuses on the right techniques executed the right way in the right mind set. This makes this book the right read whether you're looking to tighten up your game or are new and want inspirational introduction that limits bad habits. The Doctor is definitely in.

the book is worth 5 stars - no hyperbole here. The voice of a confident, no nonsense teacher/coach comes through loud and clear. One learns as much about the attitude needed to successfully complete a technique as one does about the technique itself. I especially related to the attitude of the author (for some reason I keep assuming it is Ann Maria although it could just as easily be Jimmy Pedro) that there are always missed opportunities in a fight - it is the one who misses less missed opportunities that will probably come out on top. The photos are helpful but again the book's (in my case Kindle) worth lies in the wisdom behind the advice. BTW: this review was promted by Dr Ann Maria's twitter request for more reviews. Those who like me recognize the effort and generosity of spirit that lies within the pages (how does one refer to the Kindle scree?) please, please, please leave your own review!

This book is an excellent pick up for Judo, BJJ and MMA players. It is full of many details and tips that will help all facets of your takedown, transition and finishes. The details on armbars are almost worth the price of the book themselves. I look forward to any future books put out by the authors.

Very functional training for the ground. Very different from traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Designed by elite Judo competitors who have trained other elite Judo competitors and MMA fighters. The best part of the book was AnnMarie De Mars's uses of analogy to explain her training methods and philosophy. Excellent read even for non-grapplers.

Decided that I needed Mountain of Spices, after finishing Hinds Feet on High Places. Mountain of Spices is a sequel to Hinds Feet, and is truly a better expression of God's love for all of His creation, than what most of mankind says God is. Although guys might these books are too foofoo, I highly recommend them to anyone willing to read and find out the true love of God and how He loves each one of us so, that He helps and teaches us little by little. He doesn't want to be the expression of the carnal mind or its moods, but rather, He desires us to be the expression of Himself, which is love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, fathfulness, meekness, and temperance. He alone, has a solution to all the problems we face in life, and above all else, He will neither leave nor forsake you.

Before I begin the review, I would strongly recommend that you read "Hinds Feet in High Places" before this book.Mountains of Spices is a wonderful allegory of the various plants mentioned in "Song of Songs" and assinging them various qualities, which are in fact the qualities of Christ and parallel the Fruits of the Spirit (Galatians). In the prologue, Ms. Hurnard talks of seeing the ninefold Fruit of the Spirit and the nine spices mentioned in the "garden enclosed" and the "orchard of pomegranates" in "Song of Songs." She does point out that she takes artistic license with some of the qualities she assigns to the spices, but is overall very faithful to the Bible verses that inspired the story.The allegory of the people - in a similar fashion to Hinds' Feet - is more aspects of our personalities and how the Shephard can mold us, through Love. Much-Afraid (now named "Grace and Glory") yearns to return to the Valley to comfort her relatives who were too afraid/proud/etc. to go to the High Places. She learns from the Shephard on the various Mountains of Spices how she herself can be an ambassador of Peace.I can strongly identify with the people who are transformed by Love in its many forms and feel so inspired by this little book. It, and its predecessor, will be read and re-read many times in the years to come.Overall, a wonderful book with even more wonderful lessons!

A sequel to "Hinds Feet On Hiqh Places", this book Is equally just plain "heavenly"! There are no words in our English language that adequately describe the eternal value of these 2 books; nor can a dollar figure be placed on time invested to prayerfully seek wisdom to learn from these Christian examples. I promise you it WILL change your understanding of our Beautiful Lord Jesus. Don't miss this blessing! Listen to the peaceful heartbeat of Jesus as the stress of this age we live in lifts to the gates of Heaven. I'll be your partner in prayer.God knows who you are!

I did not know that Hannah Hurnard wrote anything other than Hinds Feet in High Places. I absolutely loved that book, so when I saw that she had also penned Mountains of Spices I was excited, especially when I read that Mountains of Spices picks right up where Hinds Feet in High Places stopped. It's a great read.

This sequel to Hinds Feet in High Places was so tender and encouraging. A beautiful and timeless classic, that is meant to be transformational, not just light reading or educational. The ending is everything one could hope, although gentle, humorous and subtle, and left me wanting it to be a trilogy! :-)

This is the third book of hers I have read. They all brought clarity joy and made me look into myself. I will read more and highly recommend them not just to those newly saved but the body at large

I loved her book Hinds Feet in High Places - it was life changing and wonderful! But this book was disappointing. I am finding her description of the 'spices' very interesting. I really could not finish reading it.

I read the whole book for about 5 months (only in weekends) and several times I was on the edge to move to another book. I added so much notes/highlights that I will need several days to read them. In the following points I will try explain in short what I like and don't like in it:Pros:1. Author offers some interesting ideas, which may be a starting point for an in depth discussion.2. I like how he sees Genesis 1 as time of planting seeds and Genesis 2 is where these seeds become flesh (fruit).3. There is an interesting explanation of Paul's letter to Romans where the law (Torah) is first of sin and death (due to our flesh) and then the same law (Torah) is of grace and live (that brings resurrection). I think that Mark Nanos works are the closest one to this view.Cons:1. We can hardly call this book "Elijah Calling...". Elijah is only mentioned in a very few places (there is almost nothing about his calling) and Moses is the one that stands in the whole book (you will read his name 770 times).2. Why Moses is seen as related to death, when he is the one that brought the new tablets to the mountain, to receive the renewed Torah?3. Building a doctrine on patterns, images and fractals (and not on something clearly written in Hebrew writings), may cause countless opinions on the same subject. Author's approach looks like just adapting New Testament texts (doctrine) to the Torah, by finding patterns and images (i.e. broken tablets replaced with new one, mean law of death then law of resurrection, etc.). It may be exactly like that, but how can we proof it just by the Torah.4. Author repeats so many times that we need to replace our flesh and spirit (duality) with just spirit (singularity). Only once he said that the spirit (singularity) must be covered with a body (without further explanation). This somehow contradicts Hebrew thinking that spirit without a body is incomplete and confirms Greek logic that anything earthly is bad (which we must escape) and only the spiritual is good. [see "De-Greecing The Church" of David Pawson].5. There are really outstretched ideas based just on grammatical gender of some words i.e. moon (female). Then almost everything female is related to darkness and sin. The same is for all feast dates that he relates to 5 (female) and 7 (male) i.e 3x5=15, but why not 2x7+1=15th of Nisan.6. Very annoying repetition of author's texts (almost each chapter ends with conclusion of what we learned from the very beginning). There are texts which are just copy&paste with very slight modifications. I think that more readers will reach the end, if author cuts the book in half (removing redundant texts).7. There are excessive citations from the Bible (KJV). A few texts, repeat over and over again (sometimes in several pages). This also makes reading very boring. BTW, Did the author ever think that KJV may not be flawless? See for example an alternative translation of the letter to the Hebrews8. Book raises more questions than answers. For example author insists that all people (Jews and Gentiles) should follow the Torah, but doesn't explain how practically we should do it. Which commandments are literal and which spiritual (as circumcision of heart)? Isn't the law of Moses specific to Israel (or it's for any other nation as well)? From the whole Torah, he speaks exclusively only about keeping the Sabbath and circumcision.9. Author somehow overlooks when some Bible text relates specifically to Israel (and not to other nations). Whenever a text starts with "Hear Israel" or clearly relates to Israel, author then states "We must ...". On the other hand he stresses enough that nations (Gentiles) are not grafted into Israel, but in the Messiah.10. Author doesn't state if he is a Jew (it seems he is a former member of a Hebrew Roots movement), but observing his writing, most probably we're reading explanation of the Torah, written by a non-Hebrew speaking/thinking person.

He continued to tell me this is the best hebraic roots books he has ever read and how it answered questions and pravocted more questions. The thing I love about this book, and author is how they get you so excited to study the word, and know what the bible REALLY says!!!

Very thought provoking book. If you think you know about what the early Church was like I challenge you to read this book! Not what most Christians would expect, but take the challenge and be prepared for some surprises.

I went from scoring in the high 600's before studying using this book, to consistently scoring in the high 700's - 800. The writing is very intuitive, with great practice problems and explanations of strategies that actually came in handy on the real exam.I was never very good at Geometry, and the approach that this book teaches for basic and advanced Geometry really breaks the steps down to the extent that I became very comfortable solving these types of problems. Very highly recommend, and thank you Al Pasha for all your help!

I've read many books about Photoshop, but still thought I wasn't using it to the full potential. Now that I've found this book, the situation will change. The book is thorough and easy to understand. You can use the Waite Publishing site to expand on your knowledge or use the book standalone.

The Interactive purpose of including images on the disk and having a website available sounds like an excellent idea. I had a great deal of difficulty accessing and registering to be able use the website. I sent EMail and was finally told that the registration would be completed for me. This was after being told to change browsers. The book has so many errors (at least for this PC user) that it could drive an otherwise patient person to distraction. There is a definite need for these books to be actually manually tested before being placed on the market.

Yes, this does read something like a textbook at first glance. It goes beyond the traditional boring textbook style by containing many,many interactive projects. In fact, most of the book consists of hands-on practice with the myriad of elements that make up Photoshop 4. The only reservation I have about the book is-can one possibly remember it all. The author apparently can, I'm not sure I can. My fault. I wish I'd had Sherry London for a teacher when I was in school. This book is excellent!

This book is ok for the beginers. I also find this book helpful but it has some difficulties that I find after buying this book.Such as in CD Rom there are some third party's plugin does not work properly. So I think it is better not to give or include with this CD ROM. This book also lacks of colorful picture for illustrating. After all, it is a book about teaching on images.
