All of the Spindle Cove novels feature hero-heroine pairs who are polar opposites in some way--personalities, social background, etc.--and A Week to be Wicked is my favorite. A bluestocking (a serious scientist, no less) and a fribble on an opposite-sex buddies' road trip in which each of them grows up. Pure fantasy but highly engaging, and with a neat twist at the end. Masterful story-telling by Ms. Dare.
I absolutely love this book. It has everything: likable characters, a great plot, hilarious scenes, and visible chemistry. Tessa Dare is one of my favorite authors and she outdid herself with this book.This book was actually one of the very first Regency romance novels I read—I just re-re-re-read it this past week. I like to think of this book as a gateway drug to the addicting world of Dukes, ladies, and bastards that define the Regency genre.The hero of this book is Lord Payne, a Viscount stuck in Spindle Cove at the mercy of his cousin who refuses to give him any money to return to London (where Payne can drink and sleep-a-round a lot). Lord Payne just has a few months left until he comes into his inheritance he can stop relying on his cousin (who by the way is a very decent fellow trying to get Payne on the straight and narrow). He is bored, restless, and absolutely desperate to leave.Meanwhile, Minerva Highwood is also desperate to escape Spindle Cove—but just for a week so she can attend a geology symposium. After all, if she can just make it to the symposium, she can reveal the fossil of a great lizard footprint (in modern-day-we-know-science lingo a dinosaur) she found in a cave to the world! Oh, and win the sick 500 guinea prize for best research.Minerva presents Lord Payne with a deal: If he can get her to the conference (in Scotland), she will give him the 500 guineas. The deal is set, and off Minerva and Lord Payne go!I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but I want to applaud Dare on Lord Payne’s backstory. So often, authors use a bad childhood experience backstory to excuse and justify the terrible and selfish actions of heroes. Lord Payne wasn’t like that: he was very self-aware of his own flaws and strove to fix them even before he met Minerva. Dare does an amazing job of not falling into the typical “girl fixes bad boy†romance trope. Furthermore, other than their first interaction, Lord Payne always treats Minerva with the utmost respect.Also… Lord Payne is just a really entertaining dude. He is super funny, considerate, and gets him and Minerva in the craziest situations. 10/10 would date.But Minerva is the real gem of this book. Writing a good romance heroine is hard work and Dare executes Minerva’s character amazingly. Minerva is smart, stubborn, and dedicated—not to mention wildly courageous. Her dedication to her research is admirable, but her dedication to the people she loves is even more so.With two amazing characters, and a plotline set up for success, Dare delivers on witty banter, scenes that leave you giggling out loud, and actual investment in the story.Also, this quote exists:“Surely it can’t be,†he said, his hand stealing over her thigh, “that this intrepid explorer of underwater caverns hasn’t explored her own little cove?â€That quote, no joke, make me laugh for a solid five minutes. I don’t know how Minerva continued hooking up with him after that. That would have killed the mood so hard.
What a sweet, funny, romantic story! I absolutely loved this book, and it is definitely in my top 5. Had me hooked from the first scene. The title is very misleading, and almost had me turning in the other direction, so if it makes you groan, read the premise of the story and some of the reviews. In fact, a different title would do it so much justice.I read this twice - I loved it that much. It was even better the second time around. I will admit that initially I felt there are some very implausible moments, including the original premise of the plot, but the second time I read it, it seemed less fairy-tale-ish. Lord Payne/Colin, the scoundrel, is asked by Minerva, the bespectacled intellectual heroine, to purposely "ruin" her by pretending to run away together, thus preventing him from marrying her sister. Minerva would also then have an escort to a geology symposium where she could present her scholarly works, and share her finest scientific discovery, of which she is very passionate about. This was a bit of a stretch, but how she asks him was hilarious, and the weeklong journey was a hoot, particularly as they spontaneously assume new identities with each "episode." Couldn't have been funnier! Their friendship and concern for each other evolves over the week (this is the best part), and I was happy to read a romance that wasn't centered solely on hormones and pheromones (although there was a dose of that as well, but it was nicely done).The requisite sex was a bit overly descriptive, and there was much of it. I honestly think the author could have eliminated some of the sex, and it would still be a remarkable story. It certainly is titillating, so if that level of eroticism is what you are after, you won't be disappointed. The author injects some very sweet moments as well as some humor into the sex scenes, so the tone of the book does manage to remain true to itself. She also does a phenomenal job of pulling elements presented early on into later scenes in the book.The dialogue is hilarious! I chuckled my way through the entire book, and was very sad to see it end - both times! I'd love to see another story - perhaps with their children? I would just love to hang out with these people -they were so much fun!A great book! Needless to say I look forward to Tessa Dare's next release in September so I can see more of the folks from Spindle Cove and hopefully experience more of the author's truly wonderful wit and penchant for bittersweet romance.As an aside, I went from this book to "A Night to Surrender" - a prequel to this book - which was nowhere near as good. It may help, however, to read Surrender first (if you can stand it), as some of the history of the characters is explained a little further, but it isn't absolutely essential to read it. Colin is also in this book, and is as funny as ever. That much made it worth it.
Really enjoyed this! So original. Best mental image: a young woman running full out with a bag of coins in one hand and a smoking gun in the other. I mean, these are Victorian women. They don't do guns and money. Right behind her is the handsome viscount, who set up the shooting bet in the first place. Where Minerva shot a bulls-eye, without her glasses.This is the story of two young folks - in a series of adventures that are not typical for a period romance like this - who are learning who they are and what they value about themselves, deciding whether or not they can believe in themselves as is, and whether to take a chance on each other. It's beautifully done, even better than the first in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
