Amazon.com Review
Who hasn't put words into their mutt's mouth? From "yes, the chicken-flavored treats are my favorite," to "no, I'm not quite ready for my bath," all dog devotees are guilty as charged--although not all do it in such a hilarious and endearing manner as writer Roy Blount Jr. and photographer Valerie Shaff in If Only You Knew How Much I Smell You: True Portraits of Dogs. Blount, humorist and author of Be Sweet, brings us closer to "understanding the 'inner dog'" through his use of Doggerel, a uniquely Blount brand of verse with the "canine measure somewhere between ordered and free." The effect of this puppy poetry--when paired with Shaff's truly remarkable duotone photographs of mixed and pure breeds--is comic genius. A Boxer coyly stares into the camera wondering, "What does that mean, 'expensive shoe'? / I ate it because it smelled like you," while a chubby-tummied bulldog declares "Good stick. / Got a good stick. / A real / good / Stick. / Getting all the good / Out of this good / Stick / That's in / This / good / Stick." You'll never be able to resist this entertaining and affectionate look at our canine friends as "they ponder the confusions, certainties, pangs, and pleasures of a dog's life."

The captions, not just the photos, make this book a must-have for dog lovers. All the photos are incredible, all the dogs nearly human in their expressions, and the text by Roy Blount Jr is uncannily authentic. "Good stick" and "Digesting a chicken bone" are my favorites. The "voice" totally sounds like our Blaise (R.I.P.).Valerie Schaff's photos are fantastic. The dog who allegedly is thinking "Gone to college is what they said; to my knowledge, that means he's dead" is so soulful and beautiful.I've lost count of how many people I've bought copies of this book for. I saw it for the first time at a "Support your school" night at a local bookstore, and proceeds from the sales of each book went to the high school. Ordering online is cheaper, of course. Sorry, local high school.
I'm not usually into "cute," but this is one of my favorite books of all time! Have bought several copies as gifts. Just one example. A photo of a couple of puppies more of less all tangled up together. The accompanying poem says "How did we get this way? We're puppies, okay?" Very short four or five line poems accompanied by great dog pictures that celebrate our relationship with these incredible creatures.
Bought this book to add to my collection of dog books. Have really enjoyed it.
I am a huge dog lover, wanted a book that brought that 'feel good' like some of the pictures that circulate on the internet... Flipping threw the book I thought the pictures were lacking, but the poetry & verbiage was a HUGE hit with my son. The book went from a one star to a 5 after he opened it for Christmas.
First received this as a gift from my daughter. Loved this book so much I repeatedly order it as a gift for my fur loving friends. When you find something this great you just have to share. Beautiful photography. Written with humor. I read, then reread this book over and over.
If you love dogs - or even if you just LIKE dogs - buy this book. The photos are AMAZING and the captions on each page (describing what the dog might be thinking or feeling) are so on the money. My only complaint is that there were no photos of Pugs. (I own one! ) This is truly a beautiful book that can be flipped-through over and over and over and over.....
I bought this book as a gift for my dog-lover brother, but once I read it I didn't want to give it up. Every single person who sees it on my desk flips through it, then borrows it, then doesn't want to give it back! We're all comparing the endearing characters in the book to our own pets. I open it whenever I need a good laugh. A beautifully produced book as well.
We liked the dog pictures, of course, but more importantly, my mom loved it. The poems were alittle off beat but some really rang true. Good gift for a dog lover.
