Randall A. Simmons M.Ed., CRCR, has three decades of experience in healthcare reimbursement on both the provider side and the payer side. He holds a Bachelor of Science in psychology and a Master of Education in instructional technology. He is also credentialed as a Certified Revenue Cycle Representative by the Healthcare Financial Management Association. After more than a decade of experience in the health insurance industry, Mr. Simmons established his own software company, developing proprietary claim processing software. He went on to develop computer and internet-based training programs for medical providers and health insurance companies in North America and abroad. He currently is involved in healthcare software training and learning management systems administration for a major healthcare organization. I found this book to be very helpful in learning the confusing world of ICD-10-CM. The special sections in each chapter of "Hot Tips", "It's all Greek (or Latin) to Me", and "Take Note" help explain things simply. The "There's a code for that?" sections with cute cartoon drawings actually made me laugh. The quick quizzes and chapter quizzes helped to cement the knowledge in my brain. Overall, this book is written in a way that not only gave me lots of practice, it truly made learning the new conventions and guidelines actually FUN!
This book follows the ICD 10 2019 book exactly and its very easy to follow.
The book was written with a clear focus on teaching others to do medical coding. The author explained his book structure at the very beginning, allowing the reader to follow along easily, even if not familiar with coding. His dry sense of humor added a sense of wit where it was appreciated. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is new to medical coding, but also to those experienced in the process.
