This is a beautifully compiled book collecting research on the Design Structure Matrix method over the past 20 years. The book has very clear organization. Within each topic, a variety of examples are collected, and concisely presented. Full references are provided for those interested in going deeper. The high quality color prints makes a strong visual impact and is just a pleasure to see, speaking as someone who is a part of this research community! Finally, there is a place I can point to for those who ask to read more about the method. Thank you!

The book describes a variety of application examples of the use of DSM in different process and product domains and in dealing with different problems in various industries. The book uses colour to make the connections clear. Typical examples include:• Using DSM to represent and analyse the architecture of complex systems.• Applying DSM to represent and analyse organizations that develop engineered systems and the types of insights gained through these DSM applications.• Applying DSM to represent and analyse product development processes for engineered systems and the types of insights gained through these DSM applications.• Using DSM in matrix models that represent two or more domains at once.The large number different colourful charts in the book illustrate the different types of information that can be shown in the connection between the system elements.Is this book useful? Well, it depends. It does deserve a place in an organizations’ library to provide junior systems engineers with ideas about how DSM and N2 charts can be used in various situations. However, it does not appear to be a book that would be referenced very often and so does not need to be on your bookshelf.
