Learn, teach and talk about culture and race, build authentic RELATIONSHIP's while practicing inclusion, equity and Social Justice, which just happen to be best practices and healthy for ALL students, not just the Black students.White Women Wake UP! When you get uncomfortable, Black and Brown kids should not have to pay with their emotional, intellectual and physical LIVES! When you're frustrated, misunderstood or just don't know what to do or how to reach Black kids, REACH for this book instead . . and then pass it to the teacher next door, your principal and superintendent so they join in and change their classrooms, theaters, fields, libraries schools and school districts!! -Hint - Think about this; We, Black teachers, do not take out our "frustrations" of being raped and held like animals by White men, (who were never held accountable let alone imprisoned!) on little White boys sitting in our classes. This book and all the various papers in it are for everyone. Folks of color and white people. It is informative, provocative, useful when learning and practicing equity work. Historical, relevant and timely. A must for anyone entering into the world of Critical Race Theory and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion work.
Every single white educator should be REQUIRED to read this book. It is an informative and interesting read.
I appreciated that this book was not opinionated; but, was more experiential.
As a white woman in my 21st year of being an educator of predominately students of color, I was drawn by the title of this book. While trying to wrap my head around how to understand my students when my experience as a student was so vastly different. This book makes many generalities that ruffled my feathers because they describe a teacher I do not want to be, but in the end I have to realize whether I want to be or not, I have personally unidentified prejudices that certainly impact the way I approach my job. This book has opened my eyes to how I view and how I am viewed. It helps teachers see what we cannot change and what we must change. For teachers looking for a book to help them figure out what they can do in this time to make a difference, this book is a great foundation and jumping off point.
I'm halfway through this book and have been recommending it left and right. It is packed with enlightening information, actionable classroom tips, and moving vignettes. There are short videos to accompany most sections, so I can picture teachers reading and discussing in groups, using some of the videos to spark conversation. From the latest research on subconscious bias to tips on understanding and leveraging students' VERVE, every chapter has brought new insights. While geared toward teachers, I'm encouraging parents, restorative justice practitioners and school administrators to take a look.
Unabashedly biased. Prospective readers might forgive the overtly sensational title clearly intended to capture attention...no problem, it's for a good cause. What is far less acceptable is the mind-numbing number of assumptions. stereotypes etc perpetuated in the pages. As a 20 year veteran of working with educational professionals, I would NEVER suggest this book to anyone.
As a white woman educator in any one of our nation's urban or suburban public schools, I believe it to be an imperative to read this book in order to understand what I needed to do to change my instructional and relationship practices. Growing up in a small rural town in the middle of North Dakota gave me absolutely no background experience with Black boys. There's an old saying in teaching: We can't teach what we don't know.Unfortunately, I am not alone in this lack of experiential relationships. Our culture has told us myths about Black boys far too long, creating a horrible and unwarranted fear in white America. As teachers, we owe it to our society to interrupt this narrative. Our Black boys are a diverse group of children who have many talents and strengths, who are not to be feared, but to be loved and deserve a sense of belonging in our public spaces - who deserve a sense of safety in our public spaces.While I have been teaching in urban schools since 2009 and have taught many Black boys in that time period, I have learned up until now without this book as a guide by my side. Eddie Moore's and Ali Michael's practical advice to white educators make my classroom a safe place for Black students and their families in ways that I can immediately implement to improve the conditions of safety and that sense of belonging for my students. This book has the power to change lives - the lives of white educators, Black boys, their families, our relationships with one another and by doing so - the greater community.
