First, this is more than a typical travel book since the photography is so good it will, or should, appeal to landscape photographers as well.Second, to qualify my rating: I grew up in the town of Bishop and have made the trip from Southern California to Bishop more than 100 times, and the trip up Highway 395 all the way to Lake Tahoe many times. Having said this, it seems every time we go there is something new to see and explore. This book is the best tool I've found to remind me or trigger the action of taking time to enjoy this beautiful and historical area. The book is highly recommended.Added comment: On a recent 3-day trip from Southern California to Bishop the book was the reason for visiting 5 places I've missed over the past 50 years. And there's more identified that we'll hit on the next trip.
I gave this book as a Christmas present buuuuuuut, he almost didn't get it 'cause I loved reading it so much! My friend that I gave it to is a transplant to the Sierras from Mississippi. He is falling in love with the Eastern Sierra more and more as he discovers the magic of the place in his travels. This book gave a LOT of background information that I couldn't find in other books about the little towns, the many lakes and streams, the wonderful mountains, and of course the hardy pioneers that settled the area. The book makes one want to explore many other places in the Eastern Sierra that they haven't yet discovered. I think the book is well written and well researched. If you find yourself planning any trip up or down highway 395 this is the book to get ahead of time! Two thumbs up!
I am about halfway through this book. I was looking for a book to give me ideas for things to see along highway 395. This books gives information on places to see and history of the area. It also has great pictures to highlight the eastern sierra region. I am reading it cover to cover and am halfway through the book. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting more detail about the various communities along the 395.
We got this book for our road trip down through the Eastern Sierras in California, and it brought all of the sights to life for us. We got a much better perspective of this area knowing the history, geological processes, places to spend time. A very valuable tool on our trip.
We were planning a trip to the Eastern Sierra to take pictures. We knew the big things to look for, but this book covered them and so much more. As a result of reading this guide we ended up adding two days to our trip, just to visit sites/things we did not know about. If you want to visit the area, this book is a must read.
This book was fantastic! It was a great guide for the Eastern Sierra. It took us to places we wouldn't have otherwise gone and that I'm glad we didn't miss. For instance, without this book I would have had no idea that there were hot springs in the area (Hot Creek) or that the Alabama Hills would be both beautiful and interesting. The photography in the book is fantastic and it's just beautiful to look at even if you never intend to go. My only complaint is that the author didn't say more about the Little Lakes Valley. It was an absolutely spectacular hike, although I had to hear about it from a stranger at a campground. The author mentions it briefly, but in my opinion, it's a "can't miss" area that she should have said more about.
This is a really good book and I love the maps and photos that go with it, as well as "how to get in touch with ..." in the back. I did read this book shortly after I got it .. and did read all the way through.
A beautiful book, and a great guide for anyone touring the Eastern Sierra! My family had a great time camping there and visiting some of these spots.
