Review
"This new edition of John Baillie's classic is a wonderful resource for anyone wishing to go deeper in their prayer life. The beauty of language, depth of meaning and scope of subject is extraordinary. I recommend this new edition to all who wish to see their daily prayer life expanded and blessed." (Mark Batterson, New York Times bestselling author of The Circle Maker)“When this book was first published almost one hundred years ago it was quickly recognised as a classic of devotional writing, and I’m delighted that Susanna Wright is now making it available and accessible to a new generation of readers seeking resources to help them grow in prayer.” (Pete Greig, author of God on Mute: Engaging the Silence of Unanswered Prayer and The 24-7 Prayer Manual)"The adjective "venerable" ought be reserved for those classics that have stood the test of generations. John Baillie's "A Diary of Private Prayer" has surely earned this title. This classic of Christian spirituality has been in constant use since its publication in 1949. Thousands of men and women have found comfort, wisdom and challenge in Baillie's prayers, rendered utterly without pretense. My own dog-eared copy of the "Diary" has been a companion since college days. But even the most ardent fan of this classic has longed for an edition that speaks with a fresh, contemporary voice, precisely the voice Baillie employed in his own time. We can be grateful to Susanna Wright for the respect with which she has handled Baillie's prayers, and the reverence with which she ushers us into the presence of God. If it is ever proper to speak of a new classic - and one surely should do so only with great care - it is possible to speak of Wright's new edition of John Baillie's "Diary."' (Michael Jinkins, President and Professor of Theology, Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary)"Prayer is the language of faith. Like any other language, the best way to learn it is to listen to native speakers and practice. In this book, the beginner will find ideas, words and patterns that will help to guide and grow their own prayer life; and those who have been praying for longer will find fresh inspiration. But most importantly, all who use this book will draw closer to the God who came to speak to us in our language so that we may learn his." (Jane Williams, Theologian and wife of former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams)"The Diary of Private Prayer by John Baillie sold over a million copies and blessed many Christians over the last century. This contemporary version will open it up to a new generation and will be a great aid to prayer for those starting out on their prayer lives as well as to long standing Christians." (Nicky Gumbel, author, founder of Alpha International and Vicar of Holy Trinity Brompton, London)“Susanna Wright has done contemporary Christians a great service by making John’s Baillie’s classic available and accessible to a new generation. The prayers in this book will deepen, enrich and transform anyone who prays them seriously.” (Rev. Dr. Graham Tomlin, Dean St Mellitus College and author of Provocative Church)"Since its initial publication in 1936, The Diary of Private Prayer has become established as a modern spiritual classic. Now translated into several languages, it has become the best-selling work of any Scottish theologian. The Diary's breadth of subject matter, felicity of language, and simple piety have impressed its many readers at different times and in diverse circumstances. This updated edition admirably preserves all these qualities while ensuring that John Baillie's Diary will continue to be accessible to another generation." (David Fergusson, Professor of Divinity and Principal of New College, University of Edinburgh)"A fresh and helpful answer to the perennial cry of humanity, 'Teach us to pray." (Morgan P. Hayes)

I was initially happy to find a copy of this beloved book in hardback. I ordered four of them to give as gifts. To my dismay, I found the "revised" version to contain stark deviations from the original in text and in intent. I am returning them to purchase the original version, as John Baillie wrote it.Note in the excerpts below that evolutionary thought is added to the prayer, and the redemptive work of Christ is omitted. The prayers are still lovely, i am just disappointed that excessive liberty was taken in this revised edition.THIRTEENTH DAY~ MORNINGExample from the original, unrevised version:" In the beginning Thou, the Uncreated,Making all things out of nothing:Space and time and material substance:All things that creep and fly, the beasts of the forest, the fowls of the air, the fish of the sea:And at last man, in Thine own image, to have fellowship with Thyself:Then when, in the corruption and disobedience of his heart, that image had been defaced:A gracious design for its restoration through the gift of Thine only-begotten Son:New life in Him, and a new access to Thy holy presence.O hidden love of God, whose will it is that all created spirits should live everlastingly in pure and perfect fellowship with Thyself..."Example from the version updated and revised by Susanna Wright:"In the beginning you, the uncreated, released your creative power; And then space and time and matter; The atom and the molecule and crystalline forms; The first germ of life; And then the long upward striving of life; The things that creep and fly, the animals of the forest, the birds of the air, the fish of the sea;And then the gradual dawn of intelligence; And at last the making of human beings; The beginning of history; The first alter and the first prayer.O hidden love of God, it is your will that all created spirits should live forever in pure and perfect fellowship with you..."
This collection of prayers - one for morning, one for evening for a month - always greatly enriches my personal prayer life. The depth of Baillie's conversations with God remind me to bring more to my conversations. Not a book to sit down and read through, but a resource to pick up and refresh your prayers.
This updated version of John Baillie's classic 31 day devotional done by Susanna Wright was a good fit for me. I also bought the original which was written in the 30s with more of the King James English. I like them both, but can relate better to this updated version and find it a helpful guide that reminds me of a variety of things to pray for that I may otherwise neglect. There are 2 prayers for each day, morning and evening as well as an extra two that are 'specially suited for Sundays. While I do not agree with some of Baillie's doctrinal beliefs, that does not deter the over-all value.
I love this book. My aunt gave me a copy when I was in college, and while I didn't start using it regularly until later, it has become a favorite devotional. The prayers express so beautifully so much of what often remains unsaid in my heart. This is a version with updated language, and while I was skeptical, I ordered a copy for my daughter who is now in college. This is a beautiful edition and the language contains the essence and heart of the prayers while using more modern language (you and your instead of Thee and Thou and Thine.) Personally I love old King James language and am glad for my old copy, but I am glad to have this new edition to give to others.
Our pastor shared his love for this book at our Wednesday night service and my husband and I downloaded it. This is an amazing book of prayers, morning and evening, that helps us focus on what is really important. I encourage anyone who wants to focus and apply deeper prayer to their lives to read this book! Highly recommend it. It was downloaded to our kindles with no problems.
A wonderful way to begin and end your day. It focuses me in the morning prayers and helps me evaluate my day in the evening prayers. It makes me more aware of what is important! I have given it as a gift to a couple of my children.
Often, when I pray, I tend to get stuck on myself or my family's needs. This book of prayers takes me away from that into the world around me. For example, on 19th day morning, I prayed for those who work on the land, those who have hard physical labor, those who buy and sell, those who labor with their mind, those who labor with their pens, those who care for their families. We often are directed to the beauty of the world and the creation for which we are then thankful. We are asked to remember the sufferings and death of our Lord.I highly recommend this when your mind is weary and you are unable to pray.
John Baillie is so connected with God it inspires and you can't wait for the next morning or evening prayer. I have used this book for public devotions with much satisfaction, knowing Baillie would set the right tone. I must confess, however, I would have rather had a King James Version, thus only 4 stars. I bless Susanna Wright for her work keeping Baillie in the public eye. Best devotional since Oswald Chambers but Baillie understands our nature better than Chambers.
