From School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up—Connolly, author of over 30 other books for children and young adults (most on similar topics), provides the details on a number of historically epic disasters in engineering. From the Titanic and Leaning Tower of Pisa to the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, Connolly explains the possible errors that led to disastrous results. Thirty-three experiments allow readers to examine for themselves what may cause a tower to collapse, a ship to spill enormous amounts of oil into the water, and more. Two-color cartoon images accompany the historical accounts and activities; however, these images tend to skew on the younger side. Each project includes simple steps and explains its relation to the disaster it means to mimic. With ever-advancing technology present in the lives of readers, this text provides the chance for aspiring architects, engineers, and other problem solvers to understand past mistakes before building future wonders. Parents, children, and educators can turn to this book for quick problems to solve. After understanding the flaws that led to disaster, students could then attempt to create their own structures or vehicles with a better understanding of the engineering behind them. VERDICT Public and school libraries should consider this light, STEAM-based collection of projects for purchase.—Sarah Knutson, American Canyon Middle School, CA

I had the opportunity to meet the author by chance one evening while traveling. We discussed his STEM-themed books for children and I was instantly intrigued. I ordered this book for my soon-to-be nine year old. The day it arrived she had a friend visiting for a sleep over and they immediately dived into the book and its experiments, seeing themselves as junior engineers. The illustrations and examples are interesting and engaging. I would highly recommend this to help your third to fifth grader get interested in both real historical engineering failures and how to devise ways to improve the designs.
My best friend's 12-year-old son almost got a used book for Christmas because I enjoyed it so much. Very good for the math/science/technically minded child up to 12 or 13 years old. Some simple, cheap, fun-looking experiments. My friend and her kids spent the night with me, and he finished reading it before they left, so I'd say it held his interest.
A gift for my grandson. We are reading it together and learning a lot. It is good for young people to know that every endeavor isn't perfect and success sometimes requires failures here and there.
Kept my son interested throughout the entire book. And adults as well.
Grandson is a builder, got this for his 11th birthday. Looked interesting.
Short chapters, lots of different topics,
Bought this book for my 12 year old son who is really interested in engineering. He is enjoying reading it and likes the format of the different topics and how the book explains the different "disasters".
Grandson loved it,
