She founded the Edible Schoolyard and has received the French Legion of Honor, WSJ Magazine Humanitarian Innovator Award, and three James Beard Awards. Alice is Vice President of Slow Food International and the author of thirteen books. Her most recent books are My Pantry, The Art of Simple Food II, 40 Years of Chez Panisse, and In the Green Kitchen. She lives in Berkeley, California.

If you grew up in the counterculture sixties, this book will give you some nostalgia trips. It reads more like a diary of personal recollections than a book intended for others... If you know who Alice Waters is and really are interested in how she came to start her restaurant (I was happy to learn why it's called Chez Panisse...if you care, you'll have to read it), you'll be interested in the book, though some of us who are interested in her involvement with the organic food movement and school food initiatives won't find much. Lots of name dropping of famous people, as well as of names that don't really mean much to those outside her inner circle. Lots of descriptions of good and bad meals she had along the way. My book group had a lively discussion after reading this book, but mostly sparked by our own reminiscences of the era. .
It took me decades to get there - but Frank and I shared one of the nicest meals of our lives at Chez Panisse. I was sure it couldn’t possibly live up to all I hoped it would be - but it was even better. With absolutely no pretense, no hype, nor taking itself too seriously. Perfect, perfect perfect food, welcome and comfort.How Alice Waters managed to instill this kind of hospitality and maintain it for four decades was the question I hoped to find answered in her book. And I almost did. Not quite. But slmost.It’s written with so little pretense that I found myself wishing for a stronger editor. And I really wanted much more about the restaurant and the cooks who left their mark on Chez Panisse - and on the landscape of American cuisine - not to mention the landscape of Waters herself. But - there was still a lot to like. And I v much appreciated the fact that the counterculture itself was the mother of invention at Chez Panisse - in the nicest, most inclusive, most welcoming way!
If this had been a book, I would have put it down early on and left it be. Since it is a audio book, I made it through the whole thing. While I think Alice Waters does amazing things, her breathy about to cry voice is hard to listen too, and the story of her growing up is not that exciting.
She's an important figure in the culinary world, but she is not Ruth Reichl when it comes to life experience or the ability to tell a good story.
This is an interesting portrait of the 1960s and the values Alice Waters has held and continues to hold. She turned her affinity for France and French food into a successful enterprise -- Chez Panisse -- into which she folded her pholosophic and social beliefs. Although I share few of her views, I found the book fascinating as a chronicle of the times as well as of Alice Waters' influence on American taste.
Having enjoyed Alice Waters’ cookbook, Chez Panisse Vegetables (and made some delicious vegetable entrees from her recipes), I was anxious to read her memoir....... it did not disappoint. She deftly interwove her own childhood and coming of age story into the larger story of opening Chez Panisse—now a classic 47-year old Bay Area restaurant in Berkeley. I learned a lot about the history of French cooking and wines from her telling of Francophile experiences and how she applied them to her ongoing personal development. Overall, this book was a “good read†and I know I’ll refer back to it as I continue my own forays into more sophisticated menus. (The only reason I gave it a four-star rating was that I felt the descriptions of how/why/when/where she met various “important†people of the times became a little overbearing in comparison to the her writing so beautifully about the food!)
There is a lack of passion in this book, perhaps it is the inability to project that love for food and experience in the writing. I had just come off reading My Life in Paris where I could feel the smells and taste the foods...not to mention the trials and tribulations of writing a cookbook. I loved "My Life in Paris". This may be good for someone looking for the historical background on the restaurant....but honestly even that felt joyless.
Takes me back to Berkeley in the 60s and 70s when Alice first opened Chez Panisse. Well written, lovely easy read, full of life!
