About the Author
Jacob Ludwig Karl, the elder of the brothers Grimm, was born in 1785, and Wilhelm Karl in the following year. They both studied at Marburg, and from 1808 to 1829 mainly worked in Kassel as state-appointed librarians, Jacob also assisting in diplomatic missions between 1813 and 1815 and again in 1848. Both brothers had been professors at Göttingen for several years when in 1837 they became two of the seven leading Göttingen academics dismissed from their posts by the new King of Hanover for their liberal political views. In 1840 they were invited by Frederick William IV of Prussia to settle in Berlin as members of the Academy of Sciences, and here they remained until their deaths (Wilhelm died in 1859 and Jacob in 1863).Paul Zelinsky was born in Evanston, Illinois. He attended Yale University, where he took a course with Maurice Sendak, which later inspired him to pursue a career in children's books. Afterwards he received a graduate degree in painting from Tyler School of Art, in Philadelphia and Rome. Paul Zelinsky lives in New York with his wife, Deborah, and the younger of their two daughters.

One of my favorite fairy tales. Read it with lots of innosence in your voice for the poor Miller's daughter. And read her father as the "fool" he is, wanting to impress the king with his bragging. The role of the king is not developed here, except to say he is a very greedy man. The little man who saves the life of the future queen and is then foiled in his scheme to take her babe is drawn in a most delightful manner. He's more laughable than sinister. In the version I heard as a child he stomped his feet so hard and spun around so much in his anger that he augered himself in the ground. In this version he rides out of the window on a wooden kitchen spoon which was both humorous and pathetic. Zelinsky's art is wonderful and plentiful. Kids will love this picture book. Mine did.
This gets 5 stars because of all the childhood memories it brings. When I was a child my father would buy me a Classics Illustrated comic book now and then. I LOVED them and read them over and over. I have thought of them often and never expected to ever lay eyes on them again..what a thrill to find the e comic on Amazon for $1.99..I bought my 2 favorites, (Rapunzel & Rumplestilskin)..because I purchased 2, I received a .99 "gift"..so both comics (containing all those priceless memories for me) were $3.00. If course comics have come so far, the illustrations in these comics are so rough. But the stories are there in a simple to understand language. I loved these as a child. They bring back a flood of memories and emotions for me now. Can't really be objective.
I bought this book to give to an elderly gentleman in his 90's, who had been asking how the story of Rumplestiltskin went--because he had forgotten. The smile that came across his face when I showed him what I had for him, just thrilled my heart. For days he was thanking me--over and over again--for his book. He said he will pass this book on to his son, who has one of his own beloved storybooks from his early childhood. The artwork in this book is absolutely stunning--it almost made me want to buy it for myself! It took me right back to my own childhood, and to my favorite--the beautiful and romantic Mediaeval castle! I would say this book is definately a collector's item.
I loved this story when i was a kid, this exact one, with these illustrations. I got this to read to my kids, and it was so much fun watching them explore the pictures and listen to the story. Plus its a nice story that i feel teaches not to use people for ones selfish reasons.
I originally bought the book for my grand girls to read to them but now our four year old reads it every day as part of her homework reading. She carefully sounds out the words and is thrilled every time. The story never fails to make us all gasp and ooh and awww and the girls always ask the same questions even though they know the answers. I'm saving it for my new grand child but I've a few years before she's ready to hear it. The book is large and the letters with pictures clear enough for anyone to figure out what is happening. I recommend it highly.
I'm not sure if the last page has a grammatical error (capitalization)--I don't like to see grammar mistakes!Recommended to anyone who wants to read the original tale.Rated well b/c I received what I wanted--an original version of the tale!
A great read aloud book with beautiful illustrations! My grandchildren loved this book when they were little. I bought it at Christmas for a bright little girl aged 5. I love the book myself! The illustrations are so gorgeous and detailed.
I love this book! It’s my favorite fairytale. I was so excited to read it to my 3rd grade class. They loved it! The pictures are gorgeous and the story is engaging.Although I was so excited to get the book, I bought a new book and the text I received was clearly used. There were marks on it and although it was in good condition, I thought I had bought a new book and I didn’t. So that was disappointing.
