Besides being the abbess of a large and influential Benedictine abbey, she was a prominent preacher, healer, scientist, and artist. At the age of 42, she began to have visions; these were captured as 36 illuminations--24 of which are recorded in this book along with her commentaries on them. This book is a very powerful resource for understanding the gifts of inspiration that Hildegard of Bingen brings. There are so many books out there on this wonderful woman I found myself downloading many samples to see which was most complete. I found this one to be one of the most helpful. Matthew Fox really has great insight into the soul of this powerful woman.I highly suggest that you get this book. I have found I read it right before I go to bed and then sleep on the wisdom given.

This book was among several used in a religious studies course at the University of Wyoming a few semesters ago (with Dr. Grether, WMST 2070, highly recommended). I found the book fairly thorough in revealing some of the history and context of St. Hildegard's work and after having read a few others, I would have to say this is a great introductory book. Another reviewer noted that the color plates are missing in the Kindle version. I can't comment on that, I used a physical copy where the illuminations were available towards the center of the book (very useful).

BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATIONS

Still reading but thus far, it is just as the title indicates....illuminations. The ancients are incredible. They did not have all the comforts we have. It seems to have brought them closer to the divine Presence.
